Wednesday, June 26

Now we were ready for a locus change. A locus is merely a term for a spot of the excavation that all belongs together, and a change in locus may be marked by any number of things - change in soil color or consistency (although that hadn’t been happening much on this hill!), the ending of a feature, the appearance or disappearance of layer of artifacts.

This was therefore a time when there would be questions and considerations about how next to proceed, when first conclusions would be drawn about the locus just finished, and when speculations about what lay beneath it would guide the proceedings for uncovering it.

It may be a capital mistake to theorize before one has enough data, but one certainly ought never to stop thinking. The question now was about pulling out the rough stones that we thought might have been a crude medieval wall, and which proved to go nowhere.
