Been reading "The Kitchen God’s Wife", and am thus up in arms about battered wives. I pity the man who tries to pull such stuff on me! It has renewed my ambition to one day head a secret society of avengers for wrongs done women by those who should have protected them. Secret midnight sterilizations of persistently deadbeat fathers! Emasculated bodies found in the morning with a list of their offenses pinned to their chest! Hah! And in a generation, they will tell young boys that they had better treat their wives and girlfriends properly, or the avengers of women will come with their terrible scissors.

The Kitchen Gods’ Wife…I can’t remember anything about that one. Was that the one about the woman with cancer or something or the one with the sisters?
May 31st, 2002 at 2:49 pmI wrote the bulk of a story about a character like your avenger. It turned out rather like a Marvel Comics script.

May 31st, 2002 at 5:05 pmVengeance is rather a popular theme in comics.
May 31st, 2002 at 5:22 pmIt isn’t in things like Hardboiled Detective fiction, war fiction, etc? I think fixation on vengeance is something that occurs in power-fantasies, it allows violence to be an option without making the character carrying out the vengeance seem like a raving psychopath.

June 1st, 2002 at 9:40 amI don’t know my Marvel periods well enough to say. I’ll check it out. (My brother’s seen it and liked it, so it may even end up in comic form if I can get the dang thing done.)
June 1st, 2002 at 1:21 pmWas your avenger a man, or a woman?

June 2nd, 2002 at 7:09 pmUnless I’m mistaken, that’s the question he just answered.
June 2nd, 2002 at 7:11 pmDo not ask me to explain. That is one of the stranger computer errors I’ve seen on the bloglets.
June 2nd, 2002 at 7:56 pmOoh! I was thinking about such a character. You know how it’s established in the tradition of superheroes to go put on some costume to go fight crime? What if this avenger fought crime in the guise of a woman? Perhaps he had an unfortunate incident early in his career - when a woman whom he had rescued from some bestial husband or boyfriend transferred her affections to him instead. Realizing that playing the rescuer in his own figure of a handsome man would produce entirely the wrong impression, he dons drag to go out a-venging!
