It’s an odd business, about first names. Why are they so odious out of the mouths of some and so pleasant out of the mouths of others?
I am a firm believer in dignity; I always admired the Japanese way of doing things. There you don’t use a first name until the person in questions gives you permission, and even then it’s polite to wait until they’ve asked you once or twice already. I think that I understand quite well how it is that in Japanese society to use an improper level of courtesy on the too-polite side is as much of an insult as on the too-distant side.
I shouldn’t like to formulate rules for this sort of things in our society, or even for our St. John’s subculture. Everyone seems to ahve a different opinion on the levels of politeness that should be used toward them, and a first name is not the same thing for everyone.

The trick, I suppose, in singing songs in other languages, is to imitate exactly the vocal modulations of whatever native singer your heard actually sinigng the song.

Well, I’ve finally realised who I am - somehting that no amount of environment and company can take away. I can be one thing to one person, and another to another - but I will always be the only person who can have my dreams! My friends from St. john’s will never be so entirely possessed of my childhood to understand all the scenes from home, from church, from my Grandparent’s houses. My friends from home will not understand all the St. John’s characters that show up. Only I can dream my dreams, and so if I understand my dreams, I will know, at least partly, who I am.

It’s best not to write the things that really bother you, because then there’s always a chance that you’ll read the words again.

Oh, I may be,
Your dish of tea–
But baby, don’t you
"Sugar" me!
Don’t stir me, boy,
Nor try to spoon.
Don’t sugar me,
‘Cause us is throon!

When I asked him why he had never told her that he loved her, he looked at me in amazement. "She’s my friend," he replied, "I wouldn’t betray her like that!"

I had the oddest dream, on the hearthstones this afternoon. Odd, mostly in the sense of me having woken up several times, and carried on conversatoins which I later discovered to be absolutely ficticious….. They send us dreams like that, I think, when they determine our sense of reality’s getting too strong for its own good.

I missed the eclipse! How very sad!
On the bright side, I now have Godel, Escher, Bach, for my very own, to read at my leisure!

Wine and women and song
Three things garnish our way.
Yet is day over long.
Lest we do our youth wrong
Gather them while we may-
Wine and women and song.
Three things render us strong
Vine leaves, kisses, and bay;
Yet is day over long.
Unto us they belong,
Us the bitter and gay;
Wine and women and song.
We, as we pass along
are sad that they will not stay.
Yet is day over long.
Fruit and flowers among,
What is better than they:
Wine and women and song?
Yet is day over long.
